Rogers PCB stack-up and CAM manufacturing review

Rogers PCB Manufacturing

Release the Rogers PCB Build, Not Just the Material Name

A Rogers PCB becomes manufacturable only when the laminate revision, stack-up, copper, vias, RF geometry, process route, and acceptance evidence are released together. APTPCB reviews those inputs before confirming the build and quotation; published laminate values are not treated as finished-board guarantees.

What a Rogers PCB Manufacturer Must Confirm Before Quoting

Rogers Corporation supplies the laminate and bonding-material systems; the PCB fabricator converts an approved construction into a finished board. A manufacturable release therefore needs more than a line item such as “RO4350B, 20 mil.” It needs the material revision, copper foil, pressed dielectric structure, critical geometry, via path, surface finish, inspection plan, and permitted alternatives.
APTPCB separates this manufacturing page from the Rogers material-selection guide. Use that guide to compare material families. Use this page to decide whether the chosen construction is quote-ready, what CAM may change, and which evidence will prove the ordered requirements.
Source basis reviewed July 31, 2026: Rogers Corporation's current RO4350B, RO4003C, RO3003, and RT/duroid 5880 product pages, linked data sheets, and fabrication guides. The order must freeze the document revision actually used.

Seven Inputs That Make a Rogers PCB Quote-Ready

If an input is missing, the quotation should carry an explicit assumption or remain subject to engineering confirmation.

Rogers Dk and Df Data: Useful for Release, Not a Finished-Board Warranty

Rogers values below were checked on July 31, 2026. Process Dk and Df use IPC-TM-650 2.5.5.5 at about 10 GHz; design Dk uses a differential phase-length method over 8–40 GHz. Confirm the selected document revision and construction.

MaterialProcess DkDesign DkDfCAM release action
RO4350B3.48 ± 0.053.660.0037Freeze thickness, copper profile, bonding system, and the Dk source used by the field solver. The 4 mil grade has a separate process-Dk note in the Rogers data sheet.
RO4003C3.38 ± 0.053.550.0027Do not substitute for RO4350B without rechecking flame-rating needs, construction, trace geometry, loss, and customer qualification.
RO30033.00 ± 0.043.00 in the linked 2024 data sheet0.0010Rogers' current web table displays a different design-Dk value. Freeze the exact source and revision used for modeling instead of mixing web and PDF values.
RT/duroid 58802.20 ± 0.022.200.0009Prototype and verify the real structure when launch, connector, copper, solder mask, or fabrication variation can dominate the RF response.

These are laminate-property values under stated methods and conditions. They are not acceptance limits for finished impedance, insertion loss, phase, antenna gain, or system performance.

RO4000, RO3000, and RT/duroid Need Different Fabrication Decisions

A process route is released for the exact material and multilayer construction; “Rogers processing” is not one universal recipe.

ConstructionOfficial fabrication boundaryWhat CAM must confirmEvidence to retain
RO4003C / RO4350BRogers describes RO4000 processing as similar to epoxy/glass. Its guide says desmear is typically unnecessary for double-sided drilled holes and conditional for multilayers.Core thickness, bonding system, drilling parameters, surface preparation, whether desmear is needed, and registration compensationReleased process traveler, stack-up, drill data, and agreed PTH inspection
RO3003 / RO3000 PTFEDrilled PTFE surfaces require activation before the conductive seed layer. Rogers lists sodium and plasma routes and discusses plasma preference for specific desmear conditions.Metallization route, hole-wall activation, adhesive-system desmear, handling, drill program, and bond cycleMaterial-specific route plus microsection or plating evidence when ordered
RT/duroid 5880Rogers' guide treats the soft glass-microfiber PTFE construction separately and prefers sodium treatment before electroless copper; plasma is conditional on direct metallization.Handling support, drilling and debris removal, surface activation, metallization, bonding system, and dimensional controlsApproved route, process records, and project-specific PTH evidence
Rogers + FR-4 hybridThe RF laminate, FR-4 system, and bonding material form one construction with interacting thermal, dimensional, and electrical behavior.Material compatibility, X/Y movement, CTE, copper balance, pressed thickness, lamination sequence, via transitions, and coupon representativenessCustomer-approved hybrid stack-up and change-control record

A Rogers + FR-4 Hybrid Can Reduce RF Material Use—After the Interfaces Are Qualified

A hybrid construction can place low-loss laminate only on the RF layers while another material carries digital, power, or structural layers. The cost case depends on panel utilization, bonding materials, lamination count, yield risk, test scope, and the amount of Rogers material actually removed; it should not be promised as a fixed percentage.
The release review covers dielectric and copper thickness, compatible bondply or prepreg, layer symmetry, copper distribution, pressed thickness, registration, via transitions, thermal expansion, and the effect of any CAM compensation on the electrical model. See the PCB stack-up service for the broader release workflow.
If CAM proposes a different laminate, thickness, copper foil, bonding system, trace width, gap, or finish, the change returns to the customer whenever it affects the approved RF model or qualification basis.

Specify the Evidence That Proves Each Rogers PCB Requirement

A report is useful only when its method, sample, limits, and relationship to the production board are defined before the order.

What You Should Receive From a Rogers PCB Engineering Review

The review should return a clear feasibility status: manufacturable as submitted, manufacturable after an identified change, or not confirmed with the proposed construction. Open assumptions should remain visible rather than being converted into silent CAM substitutions.
For a feasible build, the quotation basis should identify the material and revision path, approved alternatives if any, released stack-up, controlled features, process-specific risks, inspection and test deliverables, quantity, and schedule after material availability is checked.
For the fastest useful review, send Gerber or ODB++, drill and netlist files, fabrication drawing, material and stack-up, copper and finish, impedance table, critical RF structures, via/backdrill requirements, quantities, and acceptance reports. The result is a buildable commercial scope—not a generic promise attached to a laminate brand.

Rogers PCB Manufacturing FAQ

Answers for RF engineers, PCB designers, quality teams, and sourcing managers before release.

Can APTPCB manufacture my exact Rogers PCB stack-up?

APTPCB confirms feasibility after reviewing the exact laminate and bonding-material revisions, dielectric and copper thicknesses, layer sequence, via architecture, RF geometry, surface finish, quantities, and acceptance requirements. Material availability and the proposed process route are confirmed for the actual RFQ rather than assumed from a family name.

What is the manufacturing difference between RO4350B and RO4003C?

Both are woven-glass-reinforced hydrocarbon/ceramic RO4000 laminates and can use processing methods similar to epoxy/glass. They have different published Dk and Df values, constructions, availability, and flame-rating positions. Treat them as separate specifications and re-release the impedance model and stack-up before any change.

Does every Rogers PCB require plasma treatment?

No. Rogers' RO4000 fabrication guide says desmear is typically unnecessary for double-sided drilled holes and gives conditional options for multilayers. PTFE-based RO3000 and RT/duroid materials require grade- and metallization-specific hole-wall activation. The released process must follow the selected material, bonding system, board construction, and current fabrication guide.

Can Rogers laminates be combined with FR-4 in a hybrid PCB?

A hybrid stack-up can be reviewed when only selected layers need low-loss material. Approval depends on the exact laminate and bonding system, pressed thickness, copper balance, X/Y movement, CTE interaction, lamination cycle, via path, registration, and electrical model. A hybrid is not an automatic substitution or guaranteed cost reduction.

Can APTPCB substitute another Rogers grade or thickness?

Only with customer approval. A different grade, thickness, glass style, copper foil, bonding material, or surface finish can change impedance, insertion loss, phase, registration, and processing. Any proposed change that affects the electrical model or qualified construction should be returned for engineering approval before CAM release.

What inspection and test evidence can be specified for a Rogers PCB?

The RFQ can request material identity or certificate documentation, finished stack-up, bare-board electrical test, impedance-coupon and TDR results, microsection, plating measurements, dimensional inspection, or agreed RF test-vehicle data. Each deliverable, sampling rule, method, frequency, limits, and report format must be specified; none is implied for every order.

What files are needed for a Rogers PCB quotation?

Send Gerber or ODB++, drill files and netlist, fabrication drawing, material manufacturer and grade, document revision, finished stack-up, copper and foil requirements, impedance table, via and backdrill details, surface finish, solder-mask rules, quantity, panel constraints, and the required inspection or test reports. Include the operating band and critical RF structures when they affect review.
